The short answer
Turkey sits inside a customs union with the EU, so most industrial goods including apparel move into EU member states duty-free with an A.TR movement certificate. Road freight from Istanbul reaches most of Western Europe in three to seven days. The UK and the United States have their own rules, covered on their own pages.
Distance is the argument for Turkey, and it is a stronger argument than price. A truck leaving Istanbul is in Germany within days; a container leaving East Asia is at sea for weeks and has a customs queue at the end of it.
But the answer changes by market, and generic sourcing advice tends to skip that. Duty treatment, labelling law, preferred product categories and the paperwork a buyer expects are different in Munich, Manchester and Miami. These pages are written per country for that reason.
Why is duty usually zero into the EU?
Turkey and the European Union have been in a customs union covering industrial products since 1996, and apparel falls inside it. In practice that means goods accompanied by a correctly issued A.TR movement certificate enter EU member states without customs duty.
This is a different mechanism from a free trade agreement based on rules of origin, and it is worth understanding the difference, because it is what allows a Turkish-made garment to compete with a Portuguese one on landed cost even when the sewing rate is not the lowest in the world. Duty treatment is set by governments and does change, so confirm the current position with your own customs broker before you build it into a margin.
How long does delivery actually take?
Road freight is the normal route into Europe and the reason most brands look at Turkey in the first place.
- Bulgaria, Romania, Greece: roughly 2-4 days by truck.
- Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Italy: roughly 3-6 days.
- France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden: roughly 5-8 days.
- United Kingdom: roughly 6-9 days by road, plus customs clearance.
- United States and Canada: 3-6 days by air, or 3-5 weeks by sea depending on port.
What has to be on the label?
Labelling is the most common reason a compliant garment becomes a non-compliant shipment. In the EU, fibre composition labelling is mandatory and must use the official fibre names in the language of the destination market. Care symbols, size and country of origin are expected by retailers even where the law is narrower.
The UK carries over equivalent composition rules but is a separate regime post-Brexit. The United States requires the fibre content, the country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or an RN number, under FTC rules. We produce to the specification you supply, so tell us the destination market before labels are ordered.
Which Incoterm should you buy on?
Most of our EU business runs on FCA or FOB, with the buyer's forwarder collecting from Istanbul. That gives the buyer control of freight cost and visibility of the shipment, which importers usually prefer.
DAP or DDP is available and simpler for a first-time brand, because the goods arrive at your address, but you are then paying our freight arrangement rather than your own. Neither is wrong. What matters is that the quote states the Incoterm, because a price without one is not comparable to anything.
