What cut and sew manufacturing covers

Cut and sew means the factory starts from rolls of fabric and your patterns, not from pre-made garment bodies. Fabric is spread in layers on cutting tables, a marker is laid to position every pattern piece with minimal waste, pieces are cut, bundled and sewn through a line of operators, then finished, pressed and packed.

This is the route for any garment where the shape itself is the design: custom-fit hoodies with dropped shoulders, panelled track suits, boxy tees with specific side seams, dresses, outerwear. If the silhouette you want does not exist as a stock block, cut and sew is how it gets made.

The term is sometimes used loosely to mean any custom production. We use it precisely: cut and sew includes pattern making, grading, marker planning, cutting, sewing, decoration and finishing as one managed chain.

Inside a cut and sew project with our team

Your project starts with a technical review of the design. If you have a tech pack, we check it for missing measurements, seam specifications and trim details before it goes near a factory. If you have sketches or a reference garment, our pattern makers develop the block, then the production pattern, then the graded size set.

Fabric is sourced in parallel, usually from Bursa knit mills or Denizli cotton weavers, with lab dips for custom colours and OEKO-TEX certificates where required. Once you approve the pre-production sample for fit, fabric and construction, the marker is made, fabric is relaxed and spread, and cutting begins.

Sewing runs on a line matched to the garment type, because a factory tuned for lightweight jersey is not the right place for heavy fleece or wovens. Inline quality control checks measurements and seams during production, and a final AQL-based inspection happens before cartons are sealed.

Realistic minimums and cost structure

Our cut and sew minimum is 300 pieces per style, with knit colourways from 100 pieces. Below that volume, the fixed costs of pattern work, marker making, machine setup and line changeover make unit prices unattractive for both sides, and fabric mills will not dye small lots economically.

The main cost drivers are fabric consumption and sewing minutes. A garment with more panels, more seams, bindings, plackets or lined hoods takes more operations, and every operation is minutes on a machine. Fabric consumption depends on garment size, fabric width and how efficiently pattern pieces nest in the marker.

Development costs are separate and one-off: pattern making, grading and sampling are quoted per style. We state them upfront so you can compare the total project cost, not just the unit price.

When you need cut and sew instead of stock blocks

Choose cut and sew when the fit or construction is central to the product: a signature silhouette, technical seams, custom panelling, or fabrics that no stock programme carries. Streetwear brands building an identifiable shape and womenswear labels with fitted styles almost always need it.

If your design is a standard tee or hoodie shape with strong artwork, white label production on an existing block will get you to market faster and cheaper. We will tell you which route your design actually requires rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.

Cut and sew also becomes necessary when compliance requires it: for example GOTS organic production, which must run through certified partners with documented chain of custody from fibre to finished garment.

Turkey as a cut and sew base

Turkey has one of the few remaining full-stack apparel ecosystems in Europe's time zone: spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, printing, accessories and sewing all operate domestically. For cut and sew that means fabric problems are solved in days, not shipping cycles.

Our role as an Istanbul-based production manager is to place each project with the right specialist and stay on the factory floor side of the relationship: chasing lab dips, checking size sets, walking lines during production and inspecting before shipment. You get one contact and honest status reports.

Lead times hold at one to two weeks for sampling and four to six weeks for bulk after approval. Road freight puts goods in most European warehouses within a week of leaving the factory.
