What pattern making involves

A pattern is the set of flat templates from which every piece of a garment is cut. Pattern making translates a three-dimensional design idea into those flat shapes, with seam allowances, notches, grain lines and construction logic built in. Get the pattern wrong and no amount of good sewing will save the fit.

Work usually starts from a block pattern: a proven basic shape for a garment category, such as a regular-fit tee block or a raglan hoodie block, refined over many productions. The pattern maker adapts the block to your design, moving seams, adjusting ease, changing lengths and adding style details, then drafts the production pattern used for cutting.

Grading follows: the approved base-size pattern is scaled across your size range using grading rules, so a size S and a size XXL both keep the intended proportions. A graded size set is then cut and sewn to verify the rules before bulk.

From your input to a production-ready pattern

You can start from three kinds of input. A tech pack with a measurement chart is the most direct route. A sketch with key measurements works well when we agree the fit intent in words and reference photos. A physical garment you like can be measured and reverse-engineered, then modified where you want changes.

The first pattern is drafted digitally in CAD, which keeps every revision versioned and makes later marker planning efficient. A sample is cut and sewn from it, and fit comments from you drive pattern revisions. Most patterns settle in one or two revision rounds.

Because pattern making sits inside our production management service, the pattern maker and the sample room talk to each other directly. Fit problems get diagnosed at the pattern, not patched at the sewing machine, which is what keeps bulk production consistent with the approved sample.

Costs and what makes a pattern expensive

Pattern making is quoted per style as a one-off development cost, separate from unit prices. The main driver is complexity: a basic tee pattern has a handful of pieces, while a lined jacket with pockets, facings and a hood can run past twenty pieces, each needing drafting, checking and grading.

Fabric behaviour adds work too. Stretch knits need different ease and different seam allowances than stable wovens, and heavy fleece patterns must account for shrinkage measured in fabric tests. A pattern drafted without shrinkage data will produce garments that measure short after the first wash.

Grading cost scales with the number of sizes and the complexity of the pieces. We quote pattern, grading and sampling together so you see the full development cost of a style before committing.

When you need custom patterns

You need pattern making whenever your design is not a stock block: a signature oversized fit, specific rise and taper on trousers, panelled constructions, or womenswear where fit tolerance is tight. It is also the fix when a previous supplier's garments never quite fit right; usually the pattern, not the sewing, was the problem.

You can skip custom patterns when a white label block already matches your intent, or when you are testing a market and fit is not yet your differentiator. Spending on patterns before you know your customer is money that could fund a first production run.

Brands migrating production to Turkey can bring existing patterns. We check them against fabric shrinkage and local construction methods in a test sample before using them in bulk, because a pattern tuned to one factory's methods rarely transfers perfectly unchanged.

Why patterns decide your production quality

Almost every recurring fit complaint in bulk production traces back to the pattern stage: torqueing side seams from ignored fabric spirality, tight armholes from insufficient ease, inconsistent sizing from careless grading rules. Fixing these at the pattern costs a revision; fixing them in bulk costs a production run.

A disciplined pattern process also protects your measurement chart. The graded specs from the approved size set become the quality control standard used during inline checks and final inspection, so what you approved is what gets measured against, style after style, reorder after reorder.

Your patterns remain your property. If you ever move production, you take the CAD files with you; we believe honest service is a better retention strategy than holding assets hostage.
