Inside a Turkish garment factory, room by room

Walk into a well-run garment factory in Istanbul or Izmir and the flow is always the same. Fabric arrives at goods-in, where rolls are checked for shade, width and defects before anything is cut. In the cutting room, fabric is spread in layers on long tables, markers are nested by software to minimise waste, and automated or manual cutters produce bundled panels tagged by size and shade lot.

The sewing floor is organised into lines, each a sequence of operators and machines - overlock, lockstitch, coverstitch, bartack - arranged to match one product's operation list. Bundles move down the line with inline quality checkers pulling garments at fixed intervals. After sewing, garments pass to finishing: thread trimming, needle detection where required, pressing, folding, tagging and polybagging.

The last station before cartons are sealed is final QC. Good factories run an AQL-based final inspection on top of their inline checks; we add our own independent AQL inspection before shipment so that acceptance is not judged solely by the party that sewed the goods.

How line capacity and planning really work

Factory capacity is not a single number; it is minutes. Every style is broken into operations, each operation is timed, and the total gives the standard minute value of the garment. A line's weekly output is its available operator minutes divided by that value, adjusted for efficiency. A hoodie with pockets, panels and embroidery consumes far more minutes than a basic tee, which is why the same line quotes different weekly volumes for different products.

This is also why order placement matters. A factory whose lines are balanced for lightweight knits will struggle with padded jackets, whatever its owner promises in the first meeting. When we plan your order, we look at which factory has genuine free capacity in the right weeks on lines set up for your construction - not just which factory says yes.

How factory selection works in our network

We maintain a vetted network of Turkish garment factories, each qualified for specific product families: jersey and fleece, woven shirts and dresses, denim, outerwear, knitwear. When your enquiry arrives, we review the tech pack and shortlist facilities by machinery, fabric relationships, price level and current loading, then place sampling with the strongest match.

Because we are a production management company and not the factory, our incentive is alignment, not utilisation. A factory selling its own capacity will take your order even when it is a poor fit; we only earn our position by putting the order where it will run well. If your programme spans several product types, we can split it across facilities while you still work through one contract and one team.

Audits, compliance and what vetting means

Every production partner in the network is socially audited under BSCI or Sedex, covering working hours, wages, health and safety and workplace conditions. On the product side we work with OEKO-TEX certified fabrics as standard, and route programmes needing GOTS or similar certificates to factories that hold them.

Our own vetting goes beyond certificates, because a certificate tells you about an audit day, not a production month. Before a factory enters the network we assess machine park, in-house versus subcontracted processes, financial stability, communication discipline and sampling quality, then monitor performance order by order. Factories that slip on quality or dates lose allocation.

Visiting garment factories in Turkey

Buyers are welcome to visit. Istanbul is a short flight from most European capitals, and a one or two day trip can cover our office, the factory or factories proposed for your programme, and fabric or trim suppliers where useful. Seeing the cutting room and sewing lines that will run your goods removes more doubt than any brochure.

If you cannot travel, we substitute structured transparency: photo and video documentation of your order at cutting, sewing and finishing stages, live video walkthroughs, and inspection reports with images. Many of our clients ran their first two or three orders entirely remotely before ever boarding a plane.
