What Is a Tech Pack?

A tech pack is the technical blueprint a factory manufactures your garment from: drawings, measurements, materials, construction and branding in one document. It is the single highest-leverage document in apparel production, and this guide shows exactly what goes into a good one.

The blueprint of your garment

A tech pack (technical package) is a multi-page specification document that tells a manufacturer everything needed to construct your garment without guessing: what it looks like, what it is made of, how it is sewn, what it measures in every size, and how it is branded and packed. Where a mood board expresses intent, a tech pack transfers instructions.

It serves three roles at once. Before production it is a quoting document, letting factories price accurately because nothing is ambiguous. During production it is the construction manual for pattern makers and sewing lines. And when something goes wrong, it is the contractual reference that determines whether the factory deviated from the specification or you approved what you got.

Tech packs are living documents. Each sampling round produces comments and revisions, and the version number matters: bulk production must run against the final revision that matches your approved pre-production sample, not against version one from three months earlier.

What a complete tech pack contains

Formats vary, but a complete tech pack for a straightforward garment usually runs five to ten pages and covers the elements below. Complex outerwear can run well beyond that.

  • Cover page: style name and number, season, date, version number and contact details
  • Technical flats: front and back line drawings, plus detail views of collars, plackets, pockets and hems
  • Bill of materials (BOM): every fabric and trim with composition, weight in GSM, colour codes and supplier references where known
  • Colourways: each colour version of the style with Pantone TCX codes for fabric and trims
  • Points of measure (POM) chart: 10-25 named measurements per garment with values for every size and a tolerance for each point
  • Grading rules: how each measurement steps between sizes
  • Construction details: stitch types, seam types, stitches per inch or centimetre, hem depths, reinforcements
  • Artwork pages: print and embroidery designs with exact dimensions, placements measured from fixed reference points, colours and technique
  • Branding and labelling: main label, size label, care and content label with required legal wording, hangtags and their placements
  • Packing instructions: folding, polybag, carton specifications and any barcode or SKU stickering

Why factories quote and sew better with one

Factories price risk. An enquiry consisting of two photos and a paragraph forces the merchandiser to guess fabric weight, construction and decoration, so the quote either comes back padded, slow, or not at all. A clean tech pack routinely gets quoted in days rather than weeks, and the quotes you receive are comparable with each other because everyone priced the same thing.

In sampling, the tech pack collapses iteration count. A first proto made from a full specification typically lands close enough that one revision round suffices; a proto made from photos commonly needs three or four rounds, each costing one to two weeks plus courier fees. Over a multi-style collection, that is the difference between sampling in six weeks and sampling in four months.

There is also a quieter benefit: factories triage clients. A brand that arrives with professional documentation is treated as a serious account and gets better attention from merchandisers and pattern rooms. The tech pack signals that you will notice deviations, which itself improves the quality you receive.

What happens without one

Producing without a tech pack does not usually fail loudly; it fails expensively and slowly. The factory makes reasonable assumptions, and every assumption that differs from your intent surfaces as a surprise in a sample, or worse, in bulk.

Typical outcomes include fit that drifts because no measurement chart with tolerances existed, fabric substituted at a similar look but lower weight, prints placed centimetres from where you imagined because placement was never dimensioned, and care labels that fail your market's legal requirements because nobody specified the wording. Each is individually survivable; together they routinely sink first collections.

The hardest consequence is contractual. When bulk arrives wrong and there is no written specification, there is no objective standard to hold the factory to, and a remake negotiation becomes an argument about memories of a phone call. A tech pack plus an approved pre-production sample gives you both the standard and the evidence.

How to get a tech pack made

You have three realistic routes. First, freelance technical designers, findable on Upwork and specialist marketplaces, typically charge around 100 to 400 per style depending on complexity, and good ones will also advise on construction. Second, some manufacturers and managed production services develop tech packs in-house from your sketches and reference garments, folding the cost into development. Third, template tools and software such as Techpacker or a well-built spreadsheet let you assemble one yourself once you understand the anatomy.

Whichever route you choose, contribute a reference garment if you possibly can. Buying a sample of a garment whose fit you love, stating your modifications against it, and letting the technical designer measure it produces a far better first pattern than measurements invented from scratch.

Keep the pack honest about your certainty. Mark decisions still open, such as final colour or zip supplier, rather than filling fields with placeholders that a factory will treat as instructions. A tech pack that says trim to be confirmed is more useful than one that quietly contains last year's guess.

Common tech pack mistakes

Most tech pack failures are not missing pages but bad details. Watch for these recurring mistakes when reviewing your own document or one you have commissioned.

  • Measurements without tolerances, which makes every millimetre a dispute or every deviation acceptable
  • Artwork placed by eye on a drawing instead of dimensioned from a fixed point such as the shoulder seam or centre front
  • Screen colours instead of Pantone TCX references, guaranteeing a colour argument at lab dip stage
  • A BOM naming a fabric only as cotton fleece without GSM, yarn or finish, which invites substitution
  • No version control, so the factory sews from an outdated file after a revision round
  • Missing care label content for the destination market, discovered at packing when it blocks shipment
  • Copying another brand's measurements without understanding their fit intent, then being surprised by the proto

A worked example of the difference it makes

As a clearly hypothetical illustration: a brand sends a factory a photo of an oversized 300 GSM hoodie and asks for the same in black. The factory quotes conservatively, samples a 280 GSM regular-fit hoodie with a slightly smaller chest print, and three revision rounds and six weeks later the brand has spent an extra 200 in sampling and lost its launch window.

The same brand with a tech pack would have specified 300 GSM brushed fleece, a 68-centimetre chest width in size L with a 1.5-centimetre tolerance, a 25-centimetre print placed 7 centimetres below the collar seam, and Pantone 19-4007 TCX. The first proto arrives close, one revision fixes the sleeve length, and the pre-production sample is approved in under a month. Nothing about the factory changed; the input did.

That is the general rule of manufacturing anywhere, including Turkey: output quality tracks input quality. The tech pack is the input.
