What is Istanbul actually good at?

Istanbul is the commercial and creative centre rather than the cheapest place to sew. It concentrates pattern makers, sample rooms, trim suppliers, printers and embroiderers within a small radius, which is why a sample can move through three suppliers in a single day.

Within the city, the districts do different jobs. Merter and Zeytinburnu are dense with production and wholesale; Osmanbey is the design and showroom quarter, historically knitwear and womenswear; Bagcilar, Gungoren and Esenler hold much of the working sewing capacity. If your order is small, fast or design-heavy, it belongs in Istanbul.

When should production sit outside Istanbul?

Volume and fabric. Once an order is large enough to fill a line for weeks, the cost advantage moves to the regional centres, and being next to the mill removes a freight leg from the process.

• Bursa: weaving, knitting and dyeing heritage, strong for wovens and technical finishes.
• Denizli: heavy cotton, towelling, bathrobes and home textiles, with large-scale cotton knitting.
• Izmir and the Aegean: organic cotton, export knitwear, and a strong certified-material base.
• Corlu and Tekirdag: large sewing plants within a short drive of Istanbul, used for volume programmes.
• Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras: spinning and yarn, the upstream end of the chain.

Does the region change the price?

Yes, but less than brands expect and less than the order profile does. Labour and overhead differ between Istanbul and the Anatolian centres, so the sewing minute is cheaper outside the city. On a small, complex, fast order that saving disappears into travel, coordination and slower sampling.

The rule of thumb we use is straightforward: development and small runs in Istanbul, volume where the fabric is. On a repeat programme it is often worth moving production once the style is proven, and keeping the sample room where it started.

Should you visit before you order?

If you can, yes, and Istanbul is the practical base for it. Two days is enough to see a sample room, a sewing floor and a trim supplier, and to understand what your money is buying.

If you cannot travel, insist on evidence instead of photographs: a video walk-through with a date reference, the sealed sample in your hands before bulk is cut, and a pre-shipment inspection report before the balance is paid. Any supplier unwilling to provide those three is telling you something.
