Quick answer

ODM means the manufacturer designs and develops the product and the buyer sells it under its own brand, while OEM means the buyer supplies the design and the manufacturer produces it. We run both from Istanbul. ODM starts from a brief, a mood board or a reference garment, with a 100 piece minimum per style once the design is approved.

Five stage apparel production flow used in Turkey: tech pack and costing, sampling, fabric and trim sourcing, bulk production with in-line checks, then AQL final inspection and shipping
The same five stages run whether the order is 100 pieces or 100,000. Only the number of quality gates changes.

ODM, OEM and private label explained

The three words are used loosely in sourcing emails and they are not the same thing. ODM is original design manufacturing: we create the design and pattern. OEM is original equipment manufacturing: you supply the design and we produce it exactly. Private label is a commercial term about whose brand goes on the neck label, and it can sit on top of either.

Most growing brands use a mix. A core t-shirt is OEM because the block is already theirs. A new outerwear category is ODM because building a padded jacket block from scratch is a specialist job.

How an ODM development runs

You send a brief: the category, the price point, the target customer, the season and any references. We come back with fabric options and a costed proposal before any pattern work starts, so the design is built to a price rather than repriced after it exists.

After approval we make the pattern, produce a fit sample, revise it, then produce a pre-production sample that becomes the quality standard for bulk. From brief to approved sample is usually four to six weeks depending on the category.

  • Brief and reference review, fabric and trim proposals with prices
  • Pattern making and grading to your size chart
  • Fit sample, comments, revised sample
  • Pre-production sample signed off as the bulk standard

Who owns the design

Once you approve and pay for the development, the pattern, the graded specs and the approved sample belong to your brand. We do not resell a developed style to another customer, and we do not keep it in a catalogue.

This is worth putting in writing before development starts, and we do. It is the most common thing brands get burned on when they buy a catalogue style that turns out to be on three other websites.
