Matching the decoration to the fabric

Performance fabrics are mostly polyester and elastane knits, stretchy, heat-sensitive, moisture-wicking, and each decoration method interacts with those properties differently. Sublimation dyes the polyester fibre itself. Heat transfers bond a film to the surface. Embroidery stitches through the fabric. Screen printing with stretch inks sits in between. Choosing among them is the first technical decision of every sportswear branding programme, and we make it per placement, not per garment: a single jersey often carries sublimated panels, a transfer chest logo and an embroidered crest.

The failure modes we design against are specific: transfers peeling off textured knits, embroidery stiffening a stretch panel until it restricts movement, prints cracking over high-stretch zones, and dark garment dyes migrating into pale transfers over time. Every combination we propose has been tested on the actual production fabric.

Sublimation: colour that becomes the fabric

Dye sublimation turns solid dye into gas under heat and pressure, bonding it inside polyester fibre. The result has zero hand, no added weight or stiffness, cannot crack or peel, and survives unlimited washing, which is why it is the default for all-over prints, gradient panels, race numbers and multi-colour team designs. Breathability and wicking are untouched because nothing sits on the surface.

Its limits are equally clear: it needs high polyester content (ideally 90 percent plus) and works only on white or light base fabric, since the process adds dye rather than opaque ink. On cotton-rich or dark fabrics we route the artwork to transfers or embroidery instead. Sublimation can run as cut-panel printing, where panels are printed before sewing for perfect all-over coverage with no seam gaps in the design.

Heat transfers and embroidery on performance knits

Modern heat transfers are the workhorse for logos on dark or elastane-rich fabrics: thin polyurethane films and silicone transfers stretch with the knit, stay flexible through washing, and reproduce fine detail and exact brand colours including metallics and reflectives. For leggings, running tees and anything with high elastane, we specify stretch-rated transfer films and low-temperature application so the fabric is not glazed by the press. Reflective transfers double as a safety feature on running and cycling pieces.

Embroidery brings dimension and permanence, right for polo plackets, track jacket crests, and premium athleisure, but it perforates and stiffens fabric, so on performance knits we keep designs compact, use fine 75-weight threads and soft cut-away backing, and avoid embroidering across high-stretch or against-skin zones. On lightweight wicking tees we will often recommend a transfer over embroidery and explain why.

Programmes, minimums and timelines

We produce the full sportswear range: training tees and shorts, leggings, sports bras, quarter-zips, tracksuits, football and basketball kits. MOQ is 300 pieces per style with 100 per colourway; fully sublimated styles are more flexible on colour variants because colour lives in the print file rather than in dyed fabric stock, useful for team kits with multiple colourways of one design.

Cost drivers are fabric class (recycled and high-elastane fabrics price above basic polyester), the number of decorated placements, and technique mix; sublimation carries setup per design but scales cheaply, transfers price per placement, embroidery by stitch count. Sampling takes 1-2 weeks including decorated strike-offs. Bulk runs 4-6 weeks after approval, with road freight to most EU destinations in 3-7 days.
