Where polyester earns its place

Polyester dominates performance apparel for practical reasons: it is strong, dimensionally stable, dries fast, resists wrinkles and holds printed colour brilliantly. For activewear, teamwear, outerwear shells, linings and fast-drying travel pieces, it outperforms natural fibres on the metrics that matter for those products.

The honest counterpoint is hand feel and odour retention compared with cotton, which is why so much of the market runs on blends: cotton-polyester fleece for sweats, polyester-elastane for leggings, and textured or brushed polyesters engineered to feel far softer than the fibre's reputation suggests. Bursa: Turkey's synthetics powerhouse

Bursa built its modern textile industry on synthetic filament yarns, and it remains the country's centre for polyester weaving, warp and circular knitting, and technical finishing. Mills there produce interlock and mesh for sportswear, microfibre wovens for shells, satins and linings, and increasingly recycled polyester versions of these staples.

That local depth means a performance range does not depend on Asian fabric imports: fabric, dyeing, printing and sewing can all happen within Turkey, keeping the whole calendar inside the 4-6 week bulk window after approval and preserving the 3-7 day road-freight advantage into the EU.

Key polyester fabric types and weights

For knits: polyester interlock at 140-200 GSM is the workhorse of training tees and sublimated teamwear; birdseye and hexagon mesh at 120-160 GSM handles ventilation panels; polyester-elastane blends around 200-300 GSM, often 80-90 percent polyester with 10-20 percent elastane, serve leggings and fitted tops. Brushed poly and micro-fleece cover warm midlayers.

For wovens: microfibre taffeta and pongee at roughly 60-90 GSM serve linings and light shells, while 200-320 GSM twills and oxfords with coatings or membranes serve jackets and workwear. Moisture-wicking finishes, water repellency and anti-static treatments are applied at finishing stage and should be specified in the tech pack, not assumed.

Sublimation and colour: polyester's superpower

Polyester is dyed with disperse dyes at high temperature, giving excellent wash and light fastness. Its standout capability is sublimation printing: full-colour, all-over designs printed on white polyester with no hand-feel change and no practical colour limit. Turkish printers run sublimation at scale, making it ideal for teamwear, jerseys and statement activewear.

Piece dyeing covers solid programmes, and cationic-dyeable yarns enable two-tone melange effects. One caution we manage for you: dye migration on elastane blends and heat-sensitive trims requires correct process temperatures, which is a mill-selection issue rather than something a buyer can fix later.

Buying advice and sustainability notes

Specify performance, not just composition. Wicking, for instance, is a finish or a yarn cross-section choice, so a tech pack that says 100 percent polyester does not by itself deliver a moisture-managing tee. Ask for pilling results on brushed and knitted qualities and snag testing on loosely knitted mesh.

On sustainability, recycled polyester made from PET bottles is widely produced in Turkey, and specific mills hold certificates for recycled content; we confirm certificate and scope per order rather than making blanket claims. OEKO-TEX certified polyester fabrics are available across the network, which matters for skin-contact performance wear.
