Linen as a fabric: weights, weaves and blends

Linen is spun from flax fibre and prized for breathability, dry hand feel and the way it wears in rather than wearing out. Apparel linens run from airy 140 GSM plain weaves for shirts and dresses up to 250-280 GSM for trousers, jackets and heavier resort pieces. Plain weave dominates, with twills and herringbones appearing in bottoms and tailoring.

Pure linen delivers the most character but also the most creasing. Linen-cotton blends, commonly around 55/45 or 70/30, tame wrinkles and reduce cost while keeping the texture; linen-viscose blends add drape and a softer fall that suits dresses. Where Turkish factories excel with linen

Turkey's woven garment sector, concentrated around Istanbul and Izmir, has deep experience with shirting and dresses, and its trading houses and vertical mills give access to a broad linen fabric market, including European flax yarns woven locally. That matters because linen rewards factories that know it: the fibre frays at cut edges and grows or shrinks with humidity.

Good linen factories fuse or overlock edges promptly, use walking-foot or adjusted feeding to prevent seam pucker, and pattern for the fabric's relaxed state. Best-suited garments and seasonal planning

Linen naturally suits spring-summer programmes: camp collar and button-down shirts, wide trousers, shorts, shift and wrap dresses, lightweight blazers and co-ord sets. Heavier 250 GSM plus qualities extend into unstructured jackets and trans-seasonal pieces.

Plan the calendar honestly. Linen demand peaks for spring deliveries, so fabric availability tightens in the months before. With 1-2 weeks sampling and 4-6 weeks bulk, a comfortable path is to develop in late summer or autumn, salesman samples by winter, and bulk landing in Europe by early spring via 3-7 day road freight.

Dyeing, washing and finishing linen well

Linen takes dye beautifully and is a strong candidate for garment dyeing, which delivers the softly faded, relaxed look the fibre is known for and softens the hand in the same process. Piece-dyed fabric gives tighter shade control for multi-style colour matching; yarn-dyed stripes and checks are available for shirting.

Enzyme and stone-free washes soften linen's natural crispness, and aero or tumble finishing adds volume. Discuss finish at development stage: a washed linen garment measures differently from an unwashed one, so patterns must be built around the finishing route, not adjusted after the fact.

Buying advice: shrinkage, creasing and setting expectations

Linen moves. Expect wash shrinkage of 3-6 percent on well-prepared fabric and more on loosely woven qualities, which is why we insist on bulk-fabric wash tests before cutting and on garment-wash programmes being patterned with shrinkage built in. Creasing is character, not a defect, but tell your customers that; blends and light resin finishes are the options if your market will not accept wrinkles.

Check colour fastness on deep shades, as linen's slubby surface can crock if dyeing is rushed. And order fabric with a margin: linen's slubs and natural irregularities mean cutting waste runs slightly higher than on cotton poplin.
