Portugal, centred on the north around Porto, Braga and Guimaraes, has built an excellent reputation for premium knits, jersey and footwear-adjacent apparel, serving many well-known European contemporary brands. Its factories are used to small, demanding customers and the Made in EU label carries real weight with some consumers and retailers.

Turkey operates at a larger industrial scale, with Istanbul as the commercial hub and vertically integrated fabric production in Bursa and Denizli. It serves everyone from small direct-to-consumer labels to major European high-street retailers, which gives it a wider capability range and deeper capacity than Portugal.

Price positioning: Turkey usually lands lower

For comparable quality, Turkish production generally comes in below Portuguese pricing. Portugal's labour costs are EU labour costs, and its premium positioning is reflected in quotes. Brands moving from Portugal to Turkey commonly do so because unit economics stopped working as they scaled, not because quality disappointed.

That said, the honest caveat: Turkey is not dramatically cheaper for genuinely premium work, and the gap varies by category. On heavily constructed premium knitwear or small artisanal runs, Portuguese quotes can be competitive, and the EU-made label may justify a premium at retail that closes the difference. Get real quotes for your specific tech pack before assuming either direction.

Capacity, queues and flexibility

Portugal's biggest practical weakness is capacity. The premium factories are relatively small and heavily booked, so new brands often face long queues for sampling slots and production windows, particularly ahead of peak seasons. Once you are an established customer this improves, but getting in can be slow.

Turkey's manufacturing base is much larger, which usually means faster onboarding: sampling in 1-2 weeks and bulk in 4-6 weeks is a realistic standard in our network. The honest flip side is that Turkey also experiences capacity crunches in peak season, and currency volatility means quotes should be confirmed rather than assumed stable over long horizons. Neither country is infinitely elastic; Turkey simply has more room.

Logistics and market access

Portugal sits inside the EU, so there is no customs process at all for EU deliveries, which is the simplest possible arrangement. Road transit from northern Portugal to central Europe typically takes two to four days.

Turkey delivers to the EU duty-free under the Customs Union with road freight of 3-7 days, so the practical difference for most brands is a customs formality and a few days of transit, not a cost gap. For UK-based brands, both countries involve a customs border since Brexit, which levels that part of the comparison.

Where each country genuinely wins

Choose Portugal when the Made in EU or Made in Portugal label is part of your brand story, when you run small premium collections and can plan around factory queues, or when your buyers specifically value EU production for compliance simplicity.

Choose Turkey when you need lower unit costs without dropping to basic quality, when you want MOQs from around 300 pieces with room to scale into the thousands, when denim or cotton-heavy product is central to your range, or when speed of onboarding and replenishment matters. Many premium brands ultimately run both: Portugal for hero premium pieces, Turkey for the commercial core of the range.
