Woven label types and where each belongs

Damask is the premium standard: woven from fine yarns at high density, it renders logos and small text crisply with a soft face, which is why most established brands use damask for neck labels. It costs slightly more than other constructions and is worth it anywhere skin contact or close reading happens.

Taffeta is the economical construction, woven faster from coarser yarns. Edges and fine details render less sharply and the hand is stiffer, which suits interior placements such as side-seam care label companions more than main neck branding.

Satin labels have a lustrous, silky face that suits womenswear, sleepwear and premium basics. Print-on-satin variants handle very fine text such as multi-language care content. Beyond neck labels, the same weaving produces hem flags, sleeve tabs and zip pulls that quietly extend branding across the garment.

From artwork to sewn-in label

You send vector artwork and brand colours; we return a label layout with realistic advice on what weaving can and cannot render. Thread is physical: hairline strokes and text below roughly 1.5 mm stroke width will not survive the loom, and we redraw or simplify with your approval rather than weave a blurry compromise.

A pre-production label sample is woven for your sign-off on colours, density and fold type: end fold, loop fold, straight cut with heat seal, or centre fold, chosen with the garment construction in mind. Colour is matched to the closest available yarn shades, which cover Pantone references closely though not spectrally exactly.

Approved labels are produced in bulk and delivered directly into your garment production, where they are sewn in at the correct construction stage. One managed chain means no freight coordination between a label supplier and a factory, and no production line waiting on a late label delivery.

Care labels and legal content

Alongside brand labels, garments sold in the EU and most markets need care and content labelling: fibre composition in the language of the destination market, care instructions, origin marking where required, and your importer identification where applicable. These are usually printed satin or nylon labels sewn at the side seam.

We prepare care label content from your fabric specifications, since composition claims must match what the fabric actually is; a label claiming 100 percent cotton on a 95/5 elastane blend is a compliance failure waiting for a customs check. Wash symbol recommendations follow the fabric and decoration on the garment.

Brands increasingly replace sewn size and care labels with printed DTF neck labels for comfort. That works legally as long as required content remains present and durable; we advise per destination market rather than guessing.

Minimums, costs and practical planning

Woven labels are loom products, so they carry their own minimums, typically in the range of a thousand pieces per design; unit prices are small and fall quickly with quantity. Since a label design serves many garment styles and reorders, ordering label stock ahead of demand is normal, cheap and removes a recurring lead-time risk.

Cost drivers are construction type, size, number of yarn colours and fold complexity. Damask with several colours in a loop fold costs more than a two-colour straight-cut taffeta, though for neck labels the difference per garment is minor compared with its effect on perceived quality.

Lead time for new label designs is usually two to three weeks including sampling, so labels are one of the first things we order when a production project starts, in parallel with fabric lab dips rather than after them.
