Quick answer
Turkey manufactures abayas for brands across the GCC and Europe, producing classic, open, kimono and butterfly styles in nida, crepe, chiffon and silky polyester. We manage abaya production through vetted Istanbul-area factories with embroidery and stonework capability, MOQs from 300 pieces per style, sampling in one to two weeks and bulk delivery in four to six weeks.
Abaya Styles We Produce
The classic closed abaya remains the core of most collections: a loose, floor-length silhouette that pulls over the head or closes with a concealed zip, cut generously through the body with straight or slightly flared sleeves. It is the volume seller for GCC markets and the style on which factories are usually judged, because its simplicity leaves nowhere for poor cutting or uneven hems to hide.
Open abayas, worn over an inner dress and closed with press studs, a belt or left flowing, have grown into a category of their own, and kimono abayas push that direction further with wide sleeves, dropped shoulders and often contrast borders or lapel-style fronts. Butterfly abayas, cut in a single sweeping shape that creates dramatic width through the arms and tapers at the hem, complete the main style families and demand the most fabric and the most careful pattern engineering.
Beyond these four families, Turkish factories routinely produce prayer sets, matching sheilas and inner slip dresses, and seasonal variations such as lightweight summer abayas or heavier winter versions. A coherent capsule for a new abaya brand typically mixes two or three closed styles with one or two open or kimono cuts across a shared colour story.
Fabrics: Nida, Crepe, Chiffon and Silky Polyesters
Nida is the reference fabric for premium abayas: a fine, opaque woven polyester with a soft, almost powdery hand and an elegant drape that holds a clean line without clinging. Korean and Japanese nida qualities are the benchmark names buyers ask for; comparable qualities are available through Turkish fabric importers and converters, and we advise confirming the exact quality with a header before sampling.
Crepe families, from heavier wool-touch crepes to lighter moss and bubble crepes, give texture and body, travel well and resist creasing, which matters for garments often sold folded and shipped internationally. Chiffon appears mostly in overlays, sleeves and layered open abayas, where its transparency is a design feature, and it is nearly always paired with an opaque underlayer.
Silky polyesters, including satin-back and matte silky qualities, serve fashion-led collections and lower price points with a fluid, lustrous drape. Whatever the shell fabric, we source OEKO-TEX certified qualities wherever available, and we recommend testing every candidate fabric for opacity under strong light, recovery after packing and behaviour at the iron before committing to bulk.
Sizing Conventions and Fit for Abayas
Abaya sizing follows length-based conventions rather than standard European apparel sizes. Sizes are commonly quoted in garment lengths, for example 52 to 60 in two-inch steps or the equivalent in centimetres, with width graded gently as length increases. A typical production run covers four to six lengths, and brands selling online often add petite and tall extensions once returns data shows where demand sits.
Because the garment is loose, fit approval concentrates on different points than in Western womenswear: total length and where the hem breaks over footwear, sleeve length and opening width, shoulder slope on closed styles, and how the front edges of open styles hang when unbelted. Small errors in these points are highly visible in a garment that is otherwise unstructured.
We agree a measurement chart with tolerance per point of measure before sampling, and grade patterns from your best-selling base size where you have one. For brands transitioning from trading to manufacturing, we can reverse-engineer a reference abaya you already sell and build the size set around it.
Embellishment: Embroidery, Stones and Handwork
Embellishment is where abaya collections differentiate, and it is an area where Istanbul production is genuinely strong. Machine embroidery, from tonal cuff motifs to dense front panels, is widely available, including cornely-style chain stitch and laser-cut applique. Embroidery placement on flowing fabrics requires proper backing and hooping technique, which is precisely the kind of craft knowledge that separates experienced modest wear factories from generalists.
Stonework spans heat-set rhinestones applied by machine or template through to hand-set stones, pearls and beadwork on premium pieces. Hand embellishment adds meaningful labour time per garment and therefore cost, so we quote it separately per motif and sample it early: a stone layout that looks balanced on a sketch can read sparse or heavy on a full-length garment.
Practical durability matters as much as sparkle. Stones and beads must survive dry cleaning and pressing, embroidery backing must not shadow through fine nida, and trims should be needle-detected after handwork. Our quality control checks embellishment security piece by piece on premium orders, not just by sampling cartons.
MOQ, Sampling and Export to the GCC and Europe
Through our network, abaya production starts at 300 pieces per style, with 100 pieces per colourway, and a single style graded across five or six lengths still counts as one style. Sampling takes one to two weeks: we develop the pattern, sew a sample in the actual or a substitute fabric, and courier it with a measurement report. Bulk production runs four to six weeks after sample and fabric approval.
For GCC buyers, finished goods ship by air from Istanbul with short transit times to Dubai, Riyadh, Doha and Kuwait, or by sea for larger seasonal drops; many of our modest wear clients time production around Ramadan and Eid peaks, which requires booking capacity well in advance. For European buyers, road freight delivers in three to seven days, and the Customs Union with an ATR certificate means duty-free entry into the EU.
We handle labelling and packaging to your market's requirements, including bilingual care labels, branded hangers and boxed presentation for premium lines, and we can consolidate abayas with sheilas, inner dresses and other modest wear categories in one shipment.
