Cost behaves predictably: fabric weight scales price, so a 280 GSM tee carries roughly half as much again more fibre than a 180 GSM basic. Turkey is a strong origin for these fabrics, with Istanbul and Bursa mills producing heavy jerseys routinely, and local sourcing keeps sampling loops short.
French terry: structure without bulk
French terry is a knit with a smooth face and unbrushed loops on the inside, sitting between tee jersey and fleece at roughly 280 to 400 GSM. Because the loops are left intact rather than brushed into fluff, it is more breathable and less warm than fleece at the same weight, which makes it the category's answer for spring and summer: crewnecks, hoodies, shorts and relaxed pants that keep a structured drape without winter heat.
For streetwear specifically, heavier French terry at 320 to 360 GSM delivers the clean, architectural drape that looks right in oversized cuts, and its flat face takes screen printing and embroidery beautifully. Loopback terry with a visible loop texture, especially in garment-dyed pieces, has become a premium signifier in its own right.
Heavy fleece at 400 GSM and above
The premium streetwear hoodie is defined by three-thread brushed fleece at 400 to 500 GSM. At this density the fabric stands up almost by itself: hoods hold their shape without slouching, bodies hang straight and boxy, and the garment breaks in over months of wear. The inner face is brushed for warmth while the heavy face yarn gives a flat, dense exterior that prints and embroiders cleanly.
Producing at this weight has consequences buyers should anticipate. Trims must scale with the fabric: chunky drawcords with metal tips, wider ribbing at cuffs and hem, and heavier zips on full-zips. Sewing is slower because machines cross multi-layer seams at pocket mouths and hood joins, and needle sizes go up. Consumption jumps too; a heavyweight oversized hoodie can consume 1.5 to 2 kg of fabric, which is why these garments cost what they cost at every level of the chain.

Garment dyeing, dyeing the finished sewn garment rather than the fabric, produces the slightly irregular, lived-in colour with tonal seams and puckering that defines a large slice of the premium market, at the cost of higher shrinkage variability and tighter QC demands on measurements.
Acid and stone washes create faded, vintage effects, sun-fade and spray techniques add placement-specific distressing, and silicone finishing gives a soft, expensive hand to heavy cottons that would otherwise feel boardy. Every one of these processes adds cost per unit and days of lead time, and each has minimums at the dyehouse, so plan washed styles at slightly higher volumes per colour and always wash-test approved samples, because a wash that looks perfect on one fabric lot can behave differently on the next.
One honest warning: garment-dyed and heavily washed goods will never achieve the shade consistency of fabric-dyed production. Slight piece-to-piece variation is inherent to the process and is part of the look; agree acceptable variation with your factory in advance rather than discovering the disagreement at inspection.
What drop-shoulder patterns demand from fabric
Oversized, drop-shoulder patterning is not just a bigger tee; it changes what the fabric must do. With the shoulder seam falling off the shoulder point and wide, short sleeves, there is far more unsupported cloth hanging from the neckline and upper chest. Light fabric collapses into vertical folds and clings; fabric at 240 GSM and above falls in the flat, clean planes the silhouette is designed around.
There are pattern-side implications too. Drop-shoulder styles consume noticeably more fabric than regular fits, wider bodies and deeper armholes eat marker efficiency, so expect consumption 15 to 25 percent above a regular fit at the same weight. Necklines need firm ribs and taping because the wide neck opening carries more load, and hems are often finished with wide double-needle coverstitching, 2.5 cm or more, to add visual weight at the bottom edge that balances the silhouette.
Building a coherent fabric range
A focused streetwear launch does not need ten fabrics; it needs two or three that are right. A workable hypothetical capsule: one 260-280 GSM combed jersey for tees in four colours, one 380-420 GSM brushed fleece shared across hoodie and sweatpants, and optionally one 340 GSM French terry for a lighter crewneck. Sharing fabrics across styles concentrates volume, which helps you meet fabric minimums, improves your price per kilogram, and keeps colour consistent across matching sets.
Sample the same fabric with and without your intended wash before committing the range, and keep a swatch library of everything you approve with GSM, composition and mill reference noted. Twelve months in, that library is what lets you reorder the fabric your customers already love instead of chasing a lookalike.
