What counts as a heavyweight tee

A standard promotional t-shirt sits around 150-180 GSM. Heavyweight starts where that range ends: 240 GSM is the entry point most premium blank brands use, 280 GSM is the streetwear standard, and 300-320 GSM is the top of what a single jersey can carry before it starts behaving like light fleece. The extra weight comes from thicker yarns, usually 20/1 or 16/1 open-end or ring-spun cotton, knitted on a tighter gauge so the fabric has body and opacity rather than just bulk.

Turkish mills are strong in exactly this territory. Cotton single jersey in 240-320 GSM is a running programme for several of the knitters we work with, in both carded open-end yarn, which gives the dry, matte, slightly grainy hand that streetwear buyers ask for, and combed ring-spun, which is smoother and prints more cleanly. We will recommend one or the other based on how you plan to decorate and wash the garment.

Tubular vs side-seamed construction

Tubular bodies are knitted as a continuous tube, so there are no side seams. The garment hangs cleaner, there is no seam torque after washing, and sewing cost per unit is slightly lower. The trade-off is that tubular fabric comes in fixed circumferences, so your chest widths are constrained by available tube diameters, and grading between sizes is less flexible. Tubular suits classic straight-block heavyweight tees at high volumes.

Side-seamed bodies are cut from open-width fabric, which means full pattern freedom: true boxy blocks, exaggerated drop shoulders, tapered hems and any chest width you specify. Nearly all oversized heavyweight programmes we run are side-seamed for this reason. Expect a marginally higher CM cost and, on heavier fabrics, a request from the factory to double-turn or tape the side seams so they lie flat.

Construction details that make the weight work

Weight alone does not make a premium tee. On a 280 GSM body we specify a firm 1x1 rib collar, usually with spandex for recovery, cut deep enough (2-2.5 cm) to hold its shape. Necklines are taped shoulder to shoulder, hems and cuffs are twin-needle stitched with the correct differential feed so heavy fabric does not ripple, and drop-shoulder seams are overlocked and top-stitched to control the extra fabric at the armhole.

Shrinkage is the other technical point. Heavy open-end cotton can shrink 5-8 percent unfinished, so we have fabric compacted or pre-shrunk at the mill and confirm residual shrinkage on the pre-production sample wash test before cutting bulk. If you want a washed, pre-shrunk retail-ready garment, a garment wash can be added, which typically adds 1-2 weeks to the bulk timeline.

Pricing, MOQ and lead times for heavyweight tees

Our MOQ is 300 pieces per style, with 100 pieces per colourway on knit programmes, so a single style can run in three colours. Fabric is the biggest cost driver on a heavyweight tee: a 300 GSM body simply uses roughly twice the cotton of a 150 GSM promo shirt, and oversized blocks add consumption again. Yarn choice (open-end vs ring-spun), collar construction and any garment wash move the price next.

Sampling takes 1-2 weeks once we have your tech pack or reference garment. Bulk production runs 4-6 weeks after sample approval; add 1-2 weeks if the programme includes garment dye or wash. Road freight to most EU destinations takes 3-7 days, which is the main reason heavyweight blank brands produce in Turkey rather than Asia: reorders land weeks faster.
