Where 300 GSM sits in the hoodie weight spectrum

Hoodie fabrics run from about 240 GSM fast-fashion fleece up to 500+ GSM ultra-heavy streetwear pieces. 300 GSM is the first weight that reads as quality: the hood stands with some body, the silhouette holds, and the garment feels like a keeper rather than a giveaway. It is also the heaviest weight that still drapes softly and wears comfortably indoors, which matters for brands selling hoodies as everyday pieces rather than winter outerwear.

Commercially, 300 GSM is a smart entry-heavy choice: fabric consumption per hoodie is 30-40 percent lower than a 450 GSM programme, which shows directly in unit cost, and the lighter panels are easier to sew cleanly, keeping seam quality consistent across a bulk run. Turkish mills knit 300 GSM cotton and cotton-poly fleece as a standing programme, so colour availability and reorder speed are excellent.

Loopback or brushed: choosing the inside face

The same 300 GSM three-thread fleece can be finished two ways. Loopback (french terry) leaves the inner yarn loops intact: the fabric is breathable, slightly textured inside, and has a clean, dry, premium hand that suits spring-autumn wear and athletic-adjacent brands. Brushed fleece runs the same fabric through a brushing machine that raises the loops into a soft nap: warmer, softer against the skin, and what most consumers picture when they think of a hoodie.

Brushing slightly lofts the fabric, so a brushed 300 GSM can feel marginally thicker than its loopback twin while weighing the same. It also consumes a little strength from the back yarn, which is why we specify the brushing depth with the mill rather than leaving it to default. If you are undecided, we sample both finishes from the same greige fabric so the only variable is the inside face.

Construction spec for a 300 GSM hoodie

Our standard 300 GSM hoodie uses an 80/20 cotton-polyester or 100 percent cotton three-thread fleece with a combed cotton face for clean printing. Construction includes a double-layer or lined hood, metal or colour-matched eyelets, flat or round drawcords, a kangaroo pocket with bartacked openings, and 2x2 rib at cuffs and hem with spandex for recovery. Half-moon back-neck panels, herringbone neck tape and woven labels are standard options.

At 300 GSM we can run either set-in sleeves for a cleaner classic look or drop shoulders for a relaxed streetwear block. Because the fabric is lighter than heavyweight fleece, raglan constructions also work well, which they often do not at 450+ GSM. Zip-hoodie versions run on the same fabric with YKK or equivalent zips.

MOQ, cost drivers and realistic timelines

MOQ is 300 pieces per style with 100 per colourway. Cost drivers at this weight, in order: fabric composition (100 percent cotton costs more than 80/20), block size, hood lining, decoration and packaging. A 300 GSM hoodie is one of the most price-efficient ways to launch a premium fleece programme because the fabric bill stays moderate while perceived quality is high.

Sampling takes 1-2 weeks. Bulk production runs 4-6 weeks after approval for piece-dyed colours. If your programme is garment-dyed or washed for a faded finish, plan for an extra 1-2 weeks and slightly wider colour tolerances, which we manage with approved shade bands.
