Lambskin, cowhide and suede: choosing the right hide

Lambskin at roughly 0.5-0.7 mm gives the soft, draping hand that fashion biker and bomber jackets are known for; it is light on the shoulders but less abrasion-resistant. Cowhide at 0.9-1.2 mm is stiffer and heavier, suited to classic moto jackets and styles that need to hold their shape over years of wear. Goat suede and nubuck sit between the two and work well for trucker and shirt-jacket silhouettes.

Hide selection matters as much as species: we grade skins for scars, grain consistency and dye uniformity before cutting, because a jacket panel cut from an uneven hide will show under store lighting. Aniline, semi-aniline and pigmented finishes are all available, along with washed and waxed treatments for a vintage hand.

Construction details on leather outerwear

Leather sewing is a specialist trade. Our partner ateliers work with walking-foot machines, skived and taped seams to reduce bulk, and reinforced stress points at pockets and cuffs. Linings are typically viscose or polyester twill, with quilted body linings available for winter-weight styles.

Hardware defines a leather jacket: YKK metal zips in brass, gunmetal or antique finishes, press studs, belt buckles and D-rings are specified by finish and sourced during sampling. Classic details such as ziped cuffs, snap-down lapels, quilted shoulder panels and perforated accents are all within scope.

Realistic timelines and costs for leather

Be aware that leather programs run slower and cost more to start than fabric outerwear. Sampling takes 2-3 weeks and sample costs are higher because each prototype consumes real hides and specialist labour. Bulk production runs 6-8 weeks after approval, driven by hide procurement, matching and the slower pace of leather sewing.

Unit prices depend chiefly on hide type, jacket panel count and hardware. Quality control for hides and finished jackets

QC starts before sewing: incoming hides are checked for thickness tolerance, tears and dye lots, and panels are matched so left and right fronts read as one surface. During production we run inline checks on seam strength and zip installation.

Final inspection covers measurements against the approved size spec, hardware function, lining attachment and appearance under bright light. You receive a photo report before dispatch, and road freight reaches EU markets in 3-7 days.

Labelling, aftercare and compliance

We advise on correct EU labelling for leather goods, including material declarations and care instructions, and can produce branded aftercare cards for retail. Nickel-safe hardware options are available for skin-contact components on request.
