Fabric Testing Guide for Clothing Brands
You do not need a laboratory to catch most fabric problems, and you do not need blind trust for the rest. This guide covers the checks a brand can run itself, the tests worth commissioning, and how to read the reports mills hand you.

Quick answer
Brands can test fabric themselves before cutting: weigh GSM with a circular cutter and scale (tolerance about plus or minus 5 percent), run three domestic washes to screen shrinkage, and rub a white cloth across deep shades to check colour transfer. Why Test Fabric at All
Fabric is typically the largest cost component in a garment and the source of the failures customers punish hardest: shrinking out of fit, colour bleeding onto other laundry, pilling into a worn-out look within weeks. By the time these problems surface in customer hands, the production money is fully spent.
The economics of testing are lopsided in your favour. A GSM check costs minutes, a home wash test costs a few days, and a commissioned lab package costs a modest fixed fee, all against a production run worth thousands. The rule that follows: test before cutting, because every fabric problem is cheap before scissors touch it and expensive after.
Testing also disciplines the supply chain. Mills and factories quote differently to buyers who verify, and a brand known to check GSM on arrival rarely receives light fabric twice.
GSM Verification: The Five-Minute Check
GSM, grams per square metre, is the standard measure of fabric weight and one of the main things you pay for; a 240 gsm tee fabric costs more than a 180 gsm one, and substitution is the classic quiet cost-cut. Verifying it requires a circular GSM cutter, which punches an exact 100 square centimetre disc, and a precision scale.
The method: cut discs from several places across the fabric, avoiding edges, weigh each in grams, and multiply by 100. Average the readings. A common commercial tolerance is about plus or minus 5 percent against the nominal weight, so a fabric sold as 240 gsm should read roughly 228 to 252.
Without a cutter, an approximation works for screening: cut a measured square, say 20 by 20 centimetres, weigh it, and scale up to a square metre. It is less precise but easily catches a 240 fabric arriving at 200. Any professional mill or factory owns a proper cutter and will demonstrate the test in front of you on request; hesitation to do so is itself information.
Shrinkage Testing at Home and in the Lab
The home version: mark a large square on the fabric or garment with thread or fabric marker, measure it precisely, then wash and dry following the intended care label at least three times. Re-measure and express the change as a percentage in length and width. While you are at it, check for skewing, the twist that rotates side seams, and general appearance after washing.
Lab versions do the same thing under standardised wash programs and conditioning, which makes results comparable across fabrics and defensible in a dispute. As indicative expectations, quality cotton knits are commonly engineered to hold within about 5 percent, and wovens within about 3 percent; the number in your order agreement is the one that binds.
For knits, ask the mill or factory two questions alongside any test: is the fabric compacted or preshrunk, and is fabric relaxed before cutting? Well-finished fabric plus relaxed cutting is what turns a good lab number into garments that actually hold their spec in customers' machines.
Colourfastness: Wash, Rub, Perspiration, Light
Colourfastness is measured in several separate tests because colour fails in several separate ways. Wash fastness checks bleeding and fading in laundering, including staining of adjacent fabrics. Rub fastness, also called crocking, checks colour transferring onto whatever the fabric rubs against, tested dry and wet. Perspiration fastness matters for anything worn against active skin, and light fastness for outdoor-worn or displayed goods.
Results are graded on scales where 5 is best. As an indicative benchmark, buyers commonly require around grade 4 for wash fastness and dry rubbing, while accepting somewhat lower wet-rub results on deliberately heavy shades such as indigo denim, where some transfer is inherent to the dye.
The quick screening versions: wash a swatch with a piece of white cotton and inspect the white for staining, and rub a white cloth firmly across the fabric dry and then damp. These catch gross failures. For deep reds, blacks and indigos destined for a real production run, the proper lab tests are cheap relative to the returns a bleeding colour generates.
Pilling and Composition Verification
Pilling, the small fibre balls that form with wear, is tested in labs by controlled abrasion, for example the Martindale method, and graded from 1, severe, to 5, none, with around grade 4 a common expectation for mid-market knits. The home approximation is honest wear: rub the fabric against itself vigorously and wear or carry the sample for a week. Brushed surfaces, loose knits and soft-twist yarns are the risk categories worth testing before commitment.
Composition verification answers whether the fibre content on the invoice matches reality, and unlike weight, fibre content cannot be reliably judged by hand; a well-made poly-cotton can feel convincingly like cotton. Labs verify composition by dissolving or microscopically identifying fibres and reporting percentages, which matters both for product quality and because your care label composition claim is a legal statement in most markets.
The practical approach: rely on the mill's test reports for stock qualities from reputable suppliers, and commission verification when the fabric is unusually cheap for its claimed content, when the supplier is new and unproven, or when your marketing leans on the composition, such as 100 percent organic cotton claims.
When to Use Third-Party Labs, and How to Read Reports
Commission an independent lab when the stakes exceed what a home test defends: a large first order with a new mill, a compliance-sensitive product such as babywear, a composition claim central to your marketing, or an active dispute. International labs including SGS, Intertek and Bureau Veritas operate in Turkey, and a basic package covering shrinkage, colourfastness, pilling and composition on one fabric is a modest fixed cost, indicatively in the low hundreds of dollars.
Sampling matters as much as testing: the tested swatch must come from your actual bulk lot, ideally drawn at the factory rather than supplied by the mill, since testing a golden sample proves nothing about the delivered rolls. Note the lot or batch number on the report.
When a mill hands you an existing report, read four things: the report date, because a three-year-old report describes a different production batch; the tested article, which must match your fabric quality and colour depth; the test standards used; and the actual grades, not just a pass stamp. And keep the frame honest: a lab report describes a batch of fabric, while your final protection on garments is the inspection regime covered in our quality standards guide.
